Dear Michelle Valentine,

My best friend and I have known each other since high school. We are very close and spend a lot of time together. Lately she has been a little distant toward me ever since I have been dating this new guy.

My boyfriend and I have been together for about 3 months now.

My boyfriend just told me that “Kim” has been flirting with him when I am not around.

He says she sits really close to him, sometimes puts her hand on his thigh, and always leans in closely to him. He says it has been going on for a while, and he does not like her doing that to him, because it makes him feel uncomfortable. He wants me to talk to her.

What should I say?

Dear Sister,

I am sure you are perplexed as to why your “best friend” is hitting on your boyfriend.

A few things to consider are that she is

A. Jealous
B. Does not value your friendship, and
C. Needs a boyfriend of her own

What I suggest you do is sit her down in a comfortable atmosphere and tell her that you do not consider anyone a friend who hits on your boyfriend and that you must discontinue your friendship with her. If she gets angry and denies any wrong doing, you may want to consider meeting with her AND your boyfriend to decide what is really going on.

If she asks your forgiveness, that is your choice.

A question I may have, though, is why your boyfriend let this go on for so long, and why had he not confronted her?

Maybe you should look a little deeper into your budding relationship with this guy.

Dear Reader:

What would you do if your best friend was flirting with your boyfriend?
