Dear Michelle Valentine,
I moved to Florida from Chicago in November to get a film and video degree. All of my good friends are back in Illinois, but I had to leave them behind in the Windy City to pursue my dreams and goals.
I’ve met several people down here in Florida, but no one I’d really like to hang with. The people here are weird, and the women have no morals or family values.
I come from a very family-oriented background, “old-fashioned,” you could say. I want to continue on like my parents’ marriage, and with a family like my brothers and sisters have.
I want to get married, build a house, have kids, get a dog, take vacations – an all-American family like the TV show Seventh Heaven.
I have 10 more months until I graduate, and then I’m leaving.
What should I do?
Keith, Chicagoan via email
Dear Keith,
First of all, there are many good women here in Florida who have morals and family values just like yourself!
Perhaps because you are so adamant about not accepting your new home in Florida, you are choosing to maintain a negative attitude toward everyone in general. Sometimes it is necessary to go though some denial when you move to a new location because you “had to” – in your case, your desire to pursue a particular type of education.
If you take off your sunglasses and take a look around Florida, you will see many, many happy families with a home, children, a dog – all living their own version of Seventh Heaven.
I suggest you start walking around with a smile on your face and make new friends with people who whom you have common interests. Better yet, take a drive to the ocean and realize how beautiful Florida is. Maybe when your 10 months of schooling are you, you will have made some wonderful new friends and will decide to stay here with a happy outlook!
Do you think ladies from different states have a different mind set about morals?

As a Floridian and a woman, I have to ask where you are meeting your lady friends? I find that a lot of my guy friends when the complain about the quality of their dating pool, are only going to clubs to pick up women…maybe try meeting a nice girl at a coffee shop. Not that there aren’t nice girls who like to club, just that, they probably aren’t looking to settle into a “7th Heaven” relationship at this point in their life. My best advice, widen your search to areas you wouldn’t expect to meet nice single gals. The library, a coffee shop, a department store…we are out there.
