The tradition of the festival dates back to 1988 when the Denton Holiday Festival Association (DHFA) was established with the purpose of raising funds to adorn the trees on the Courthouse-on-the-Square lawn with dazzling lights. Over the years, the Denton Holiday Lighting Festival has grown into a local extravaganza featuring arts and crafts, delectable food, and captivating music, delighting multiple generations of Denton families.

Since its inception, the festival has been an annual tradition, offering an array of activities and attractions for everyone to enjoy. Attendees have had the pleasure of experiencing musical and dance performances, enchanting horse-drawn carriage rides, engaging children’s crafts, and memorable encounters with Santa Claus. The event has consistently featured exceptional local musicians and the esteemed Denton Community Band, an integral part of the celebration since its earliest days.

To ensure the festival’s continued success, funding is acquired through a combination of private donations, grants, and public support. These funds are utilized for various purposes, such as installing holiday street banners, renting stages and sound equipment, and advertising and organizing the Denton Holiday Lighting Festival.
