Dear Michelle Valentine, How Do I Stay Healthy While Traveling?
—Judy N.
Dear Judy N.,
What a thoughtful question—and one I love answering, because staying healthy on the road is one of the best ways to actually enjoy your travels!
Whether I’m filming for Love Eat Travel, speaking at an event, or simply escaping for a weekend getaway, I know how easy it can be to fall out of your routine. Long flights, tempting food, jet lag, and unfamiliar environments can take a toll—physically and emotionally.
But with just a little prep and intention, you can feel energized, comfortable, and well throughout your journey. Let’s take a look at how I do it—and how you can, too.
Hydration Is the Hidden Hero
This may sound simple, but hydration is everything. Flying, walking, eating rich food, and even talking more than usual (hello, fellow extroverts!) can leave you feeling worn out.
Michelle Valentine’s Tips:
Pack a refillable water bottle and fill it after TSA (most airports have stations now)
Add electrolyte packets or hydration tablets for long days or hot climates
Sip herbal tea in the evening to help wind down and hydrate gently
Keep Moving—Even Just a Little
You don’t need to run five miles on vacation to stay well. But gentle movement every day will boost circulation, digestion, and mood.
What I Do:
Walk in the morning before breakfast—it wakes me up and sets my pace
Stretch in my hotel room before bed, especially after flights or long car rides
Choose walking tours or activities like biking or kayaking to stay active and explore

Eat Smart—Not Perfect
Yes, you’re traveling to taste the world, and I would never tell you not to enjoy the pralines in Louisiana or a fabulous farm-to-table meal in Happy Valley. But balance is key.
Here’s how I manage food while traveling:
I start my day with a protein-rich breakfast—it helps reduce cravings later
I try to order veggies or a salad with one meal per day
I keep a small snack like almonds or a protein bar in my day bag so I’m never desperate-hungry
And one more thing: I allow myself desserts, but I savor them. It’s all part of the experience.
Prioritize Sleep (Yes, Even on Vacation)
Sleep is often the first thing to go when we travel—but it’s also the most important for wellness, immunity, and mental clarity.
Michelle Valentine’s Sleep Tips:
Pack a sleep mask and earplugs for unfamiliar hotel noise
Avoid caffeine late in the day (tempting, I know!)
Consider melatonin or a gentle supplement if adjusting to a time zone
Use white noise apps or calming sleep playlists to signal your body it’s bedtime
Stay Mentally Balanced
Travel can stir emotions—excitement, yes, but also stress, overstimulation, or even loneliness if you’re solo. That’s why I pack a few non-physical health tools, too.
A small journal to jot thoughts, quotes, or gratitudes
A printed photo or quote that grounds me
5 minutes of deep breathing or reflection before I begin my day
It’s amazing how these little rituals help me feel calm, centered, and open to joy.
Final Thought from Michelle Valentine
Judy, the secret to staying healthy while traveling isn’t perfection—it’s preparation, presence, and giving yourself grace.
Travel is about connection, discovery, and joy—not guilt or overwhelm. Treat your body and mind with care, and they’ll reward you with energy and ease.
Wishing you well-being wherever you wander,
Michelle Valentine
