Dear Michelle Valentine, How Do I Avoid Overpacking for a Weekend Trip?
—Sandra M.
Dear Sandra M.,
Ah, the age-old traveler’s dilemma: packing light without leaving behind something you’ll regret. For a weekend getaway, overpacking can be all too tempting—especially when you want to be “ready for anything.”
The good news? With just a little planning and a few smart strategies, you can pack efficiently, travel light, and still feel completely prepared (and stylish!) for your trip.
Think in Outfits, Not Options
One of the biggest packing mistakes I see is throwing in a variety of tops, bottoms, and accessories “just in case.” Instead, plan specific outfits for each day and activity. Ask yourself:
What am I doing in the morning? Afternoon? Evening?
Will I need something dressy or active?
Can I re-wear or layer anything?
For a weekend trip, 2 tops, 1 bottom, 1 lightweight jacket or cardigan, and 1 pair of versatile shoes will often do the trick—plus the outfit you wear while traveling. And don’t forget to choose a neutral color palette so everything mixes and matches effortlessly.
Wear Your Bulkiest Items While Traveling
This is a game-changer!
If you’re bringing jeans, a heavier sweater, or boots, wear them while in transit. Planes and cars tend to be cold anyway, so that cozy jacket will serve you well during the journey—and save valuable space in your bag.
Choose Multi-Purpose Accessories
Instead of packing a different bag or scarf for every outfit, pick multi-functional accessories that can do double-duty. I always travel with:
A pashmina or large scarf (blanket, wrap, or stylish accessory)
A crossbody bag that transitions from day to evening
Simple gold or silver jewelry that pairs with everything
These little touches elevate your look without taking up much space.
Limit Toiletries and Use Travel Sizes
Unless you’re staying somewhere super remote, you likely won’t need full-size anything. I suggest:
Keeping a pre-packed toiletry kit ready to go at all times
Using refillable silicone travel bottles for skincare or shampoo
Bringing only what you truly use daily
And remember: most hotels and vacation rentals provide soap, shampoo, and towels!
Use a Packing List Every Time
Even for short trips, a packing list keeps you focused and prevents overpacking.
It’s easy to think, “It’s just a weekend, I don’t need a list,” but that’s often when we toss in too much.

Bonus Tip: Pack an Empty Foldable Tote
Whether you’re heading to a beach town or a charming small city, there’s a good chance you’ll return with something new—like a local market find or a gift. I always tuck in a foldable tote bag or small duffle that fits inside my main bag. That way, if I come home with more than I left with, I’m ready!
Final Thought from Michelle Valentine
Packing light is a skill—but it’s also a mindset. It helps you focus more on the experiences and less on what’s in your suitcase. After all, travel is about the memories you make, not how many outfits you bring!
With a little prep and a lot of editing, your weekend getaway will be lighter, breezier, and beautifully uncluttered.
Wishing you safe and stylish travels,
