In the wild, ostriches eat a variety of foods, including insects, small mammals, and plants. In captivity, however, their diet is usually much simpler.

Here is a basic guide on how to feed an ostrich

General Diet

Ostriches should have a diet that consists mainly of plants. Grains, vegetables, and fruits should make up the majority of their diet.

Water Supply

Ostriches should also have access to a constant supply of water.

Favorite Treats

In terms of specific foods, Ostriches like to eat kale, carrots, apples, and other fruits and vegetables.

They also enjoy eating insects, such as crickets and mealworms.

When it comes to grain, Ostriches prefer to eat oats and wheat.

When Hand-Feeding Ostriches

When feeding these large birds (although friendly and non-aggressive) they can react quickly to sudden movements in their environment.

Feeding Ostrich Chicks

Ostrich chicks will become used to being hand-fed, but should always be treated cautiously, with respect for the baby bird’s power and size.

Never approach or leave an ostrich chick suddenly, or make any sudden loud noises.

Handling Ostrich Chicks

It is also important to handle the chicks consistently and gently, providing few sudden movements.

Feeding should be done in a safe, protected area that cannot be easily disturbed.
