When you’re craving a comforting, home-cooked dinner without a long ingredient list or complicated prep, these Simple Meatballs are exactly what you need. Clean, flavorful, and incredibly easy to make, this recipe proves that delicious food doesn’t have to be complicated—or heavy—to be satisfying.
These meatballs are made with just a handful of wholesome ingredients, making them ideal for busy weeknights, meal prep, or anytime you want something reliable and nourishing. They’re naturally gluten-free (when using gluten-free breadcrumbs), low in calories, and salt-free, making them a great option for anyone mindful of their diet without wanting to sacrifice flavor.
What makes this recipe especially appealing is its versatility. You can use lean ground beef, turkey, or chicken depending on your preference or what you have on hand. The steak rub seasoning adds depth and savory flavor without the need for additional salt, while the egg and breadcrumbs keep the meatballs tender and moist. A touch of salt-free ketchup adds subtle sweetness and helps bind everything together.
Because these meatballs are baked instead of fried, they’re lighter and less greasy, yet still juicy and satisfying. They come together quickly, cook evenly in the oven, and require minimal cleanup—making them perfect for those nights when you want a healthy dinner without the hassle.

A Short History of Meatballs
Meatballs have been a staple in cuisines around the world for centuries, appearing in cultures across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Historically, meatballs were created as a way to stretch protein, reduce waste, and make tougher cuts of meat more tender by grinding and mixing them with simple binders.
In many cultures, meatballs were seasoned modestly and cooked simply, relying on herbs and spices rather than salt-heavy sauces. This approach made them accessible, affordable, and suitable for everyday meals. As cooking methods evolved, baked meatballs became popular as a healthier alternative to frying, especially in home kitchens.
In modern cooking, meatballs have seen a resurgence as a flexible, health-conscious meal option. Lean proteins, gluten-free binders, and low-sodium ingredients have transformed meatballs into a staple for balanced diets—while still honoring their comforting roots.
This simple recipe reflects that evolution: a clean, straightforward version of a timeless dish that prioritizes nourishment, flavor, and ease.

1 egg, beaten
¼ cup regular or gluten-free breadcrumbs
¼ cup salt-free ketchup
Preparation
Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a sheet pan with foil. Lightly grease the foil to prevent sticking.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground meat, steak rub seasoning, beaten egg, breadcrumbs, and salt-free ketchup.
Mix gently until all ingredients are evenly incorporated, being careful not to overmix, which can make the meatballs dense.
Using a rounded spoon or small scoop, portion the mixture and roll into evenly sized meatballs.
Place the meatballs onto the prepared sheet pan, spacing them slightly apart to allow even cooking.
Bake the meatballs for about 13–15 minutes, or until fully cooked through and lightly browned.
Remove from the oven and allow to rest for a couple of minutes before serving.
Serve warm with extra salt-free ketchup on the side, if desired.
