Dear Michelle Valentine, What Are Your Must-Haves in a Travel Day Bag?

—Linda G.

Dear Linda G.,

You know that one bag that never leaves your side during a trip? The one you clutch at the airport, toss into a cab, and keep by your side on a city stroll? That’s your travel day bag—and it deserves just as much thought as your suitcase.

I’ve traveled all over the U.S. filming episodes of Love Eat Travel, and whether I’m stepping off a plane or hiking through a quaint historic town, I always carry a thoughtfully packed bag with everything I’ll need for the day ahead. Let me show you how to build your perfect day bag—one that keeps you comfortable, organized, and prepared for almost anything.

Choose the Right Bag for the Job

Before we talk about what goes in the bag, let’s talk about the bag itself. Your travel day bag should be:

  • Lightweight but sturdy

  • Easy to carry (crossbody or backpack styles are best for long days)

  • Secure, with zippered compartments

  • Stylish enough to feel good wearing all day

I love a crossbody with multiple compartments or a small structured backpack. Bonus points if it fits under a plane seat or stows easily in a rental car!

What’s In My Day Bag?

These are my absolute essentials—items I never leave the hotel without when filming or exploring:

1. Phone + Charger

It’s your camera, GPS, translator, and emergency contact all in one. I also pack a portable battery just in case outlets are scarce.

2. Mini Hand Sanitizer & Tissues

Because you never know when a restroom won’t be stocked—or when you’ll enjoy a messy treat at a street fair!

3. Lip Balm, Comb, and Compact

Even if you’re keeping it low-maintenance, a little touch-up keeps you fresh in photos and on video.

4. Sunglasses & Foldable Hat

Protect your face and eyes from sun glare, especially in bright or coastal destinations.

5. Small First-Aid Kit

Bandages, pain relievers, motion sickness tablets—this mini kit has saved me and others more than once!

6. Reusable Water Bottle

Hydration is key, especially during travel days or walking-heavy tours. Most airports have fill stations now!

7. Copies of Travel Docs

Yes, digital is great—but I always carry a printed copy of my itinerary, hotel address, and emergency contacts. If your phone dies or Wi-Fi fails, you’ll thank yourself.

8. A Lightweight Scarf or Wrap

Airplanes, museums, and even breezy evenings can leave you chilly—so a lightweight scarf is a smart (and stylish) addition to your day bag. It doubles as a wrap, pillow, or even a beach cover-up.

Optional (But Always Handy)

If space allows, I also toss in:

  • A snack (nuts or a protein bar)

  • A pen and small notebook (for travel journaling or notes)

  • A zippered pouch for receipts, tickets, and keepsakes

  • A small umbrella or rain poncho (especially in unpredictable climates)

Final Thought from Michelle Valentine

A well-packed travel day bag makes every outing more enjoyable—and can even save your day. You don’t want to be the one searching for aspirin in a tiny museum gift shop or desperately trying to charge your phone at a café counter!

So, treat your day bag like your trusty travel partner: stylish, supportive, and ready for anything.

With love and smart packing,
Michelle Valentine
