As the host of Love Eat Travel, I’ve had the privilege of exploring some truly meaningful places—and Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, holds a special place in my heart. Nestled in beautiful Happy Valley, Boalsburg is not just charming—it’s historic. In fact, it’s known as the birthplace of Memorial Day.

Back in 1864, two young women and a grieving mother came together to place flowers on soldiers’ graves in the local cemetery. What began as a simple act of love and remembrance grew into a town-wide gathering the following year, and eventually inspired what we now honor nationwide as Memorial Day.

While filming in Boalsburg for our Happy Valley, Pennsylvania TV episode, I was moved by the quiet reverence of the town—and how deeply it cherishes its history. The Boal Mansion and Columbus Chapel are absolute treasures, filled with fascinating artifacts like Christopher Columbus’ admiral’s desk. And during Memorial Day weekend, the whole town comes alive with heartfelt traditions—parades, reenactments, and patriotic ceremonies, all honoring those who gave their lives for our freedom.

Boalsburg isn’t just a place you visit—it’s a place you feel.

This Memorial Day, whether you’re traveling or celebrating from home, take a moment to reflect, remember, and maybe add Boalsburg to your future travel list. It’s a beautiful destination where American history and heartfelt traditions come together.

With love and remembrance,
