Tucked away in the quiet countryside of Wimauma, Florida, there’s a place where wild hearts find peace. When I first stepped onto the grounds of Elmira’s Wildlife Sanctuary, I was immediately taken by the overwhelming love and care that goes into protecting each animal. This isn’t a zoo or a roadside attraction—it’s a forever home where big cats, bears, and other majestic creatures can finally rest easy, safe from harm.
As we filmed an episode of my PBS travel TV series, Love Eat Travel with Michelle Valentine, I had the privilege of seeing firsthand how much dedication the volunteers pour into their work. From preparing special diets to providing enrichment that keeps the animals’ minds and spirits strong, every small act adds up to a life of dignity and comfort for these beautiful beings. I knew I wanted to share their story with the world so more people could understand just how special this place is.
One of the residents who captured my heart is Stanley, a striking black bear with the gentlest of spirits. Stanley loves his snacks and splashing in the water, but his biggest dream is to have more space to roam. The sanctuary is raising funds to build him a larger enclosure filled with green grass and room to climb and play. Help give Stanley the space he deserves.

But Stanley isn’t alone. Elmira’s is also home to tigers rescued from cramped cages, cougars saved from private owners, and even exotic birds who had nowhere else to go. Each has a story of survival—some heartbreaking, all inspiring. And here, at last, those stories turn into tales of healing, respect, and love. It moved me deeply to see how many animals now call this sanctuary home, each one treated with the dignity they always deserved.
Of course, providing lifetime care is no small task. Did you know a single tiger can eat up to 20 pounds of meat a day? Add in medical expenses, food, and habitat maintenance, and you can imagine the constant challenge of keeping everything running. That’s where people like us come in—kind-hearted supporters who believe these animals are worth every effort. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a difference.
Walking through Elmira’s doesn’t feel like visiting an ordinary park. Instead, there’s a quiet reverence in the air—a bond between humans and animals that you can feel with every step. Watching Stanley soak up the sun or a tiger stretch lazily in the shade reminded me why I wanted to bring cameras here in the first place: so the world could see what compassion in action truly looks like.
Elmira’s Wildlife Sanctuary doesn’t just rescue animals—it restores their spirits. My visit there left me inspired, grateful, and determined to help spread the word. If Stanley’s story touched your heart, I invite you to join me in supporting this remarkable sanctuary. Your compassion will help build his new home and sustain Elmira’s mission. Together, we can give these animals the safe, peaceful lives they deserve.
