Dear Michelle Valentine,

Have any surveys been done to show why people place & call personal ads?

I’m curious to know about that type of dating world.

Dear Kristen,

There were some interesting statistics quoted recently from “Dating and the Pursuit of Happiness,” a book by Dolah Saleh.

For example, 57%of men and 63% of women said their main motivation for placing ads was to have someone to do things with, and 43% of men and 32% of women stated their main motivation was to establish a connection with a potential life partner.

In regards to the kind of people who use voice personals to find dates, 24% of the men and 20% of the women are people who are too busy to do anything else, and a good portion of them are just tired of the bar scene (23% of the men, and 45% of the women).

Only 6% of the men, and none of the women states that “desperate” people use voice personals (so throw away any of your preconceived notions about the desperation factor!)

Sixteen percent of men and 37% of women states that the reason they use voice personals is because it provides them a way to control the situation by screening people before they decide to date them.

Twenty three percent of men and 5% of women states that the reason voice personals appeals to them as a vehicle through which you can meet someone is because they are simply a busy person who just does not have the time to meet new people.

A tremendous amount of singles (54% of men and 84% of women) hold the simple opinion that using personals ads to find a date is “no big deal; it’s a viable option to find someone.”
