Why Do We Love Cheeseburgers So Much?
Aside from being a staple at backyard BBQs and diners, cheeseburgers come with a rich (and cheesy) history. Did you know that the concept of putting cheese on a burger started almost 100 years ago?
In 1926, a teenager named Lionel Sternberger (yes, burger is in his name!) decided to experiment with adding a slice of cheese to a sizzling beef patty at his dad’s sandwich shop in Pasadena, California. The rest is cheesy, delicious history! Fast forward to the 1930s, when the term “Cheeseburger” officially became trademarked.
The Hawaiian Roll History That Took Burgers to Paradise!
While burgers have a long history as an American staple, the story of King’s Hawaiian bread began in 1950s Hawaii. Robert Taira, a baker in Hilo, developed the sweet, fluffy rolls inspired by Portuguese sweet bread. Over time, these rolls became the perfect match for savory burger patties, creating the irresistible combination of sweet and savory flavors we love today. King’s Hawaiian Cheeseburger Sliders bring the best of both worlds: the timeless appeal of a classic burger with the tropical twist of a soft, sweet bun. It’s a bite-sized piece of paradise!

Preparation:
Preheat the Oven
Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C) so it’s nice and hot when your sliders are ready to bake.
Cook the Beef and Onions
In a 10-inch nonstick skillet, heat it over medium heat. Add the ground beef and chopped onions. Use a spatula to break up the meat as it cooks. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until the beef is fully browned and cooked through. The onions should become soft and translucent.
Add BBQ Sauce and Ketchup
Once the beef is cooked, pour in the BBQ sauce and stir it into the meat mixture. Let it simmer for a minute or two to incorporate the flavors. Then, remove the pan from the heat and stir in the ketchup for a touch of sweetness and tanginess.
Prepare the Muffin Tin
Lightly grease a 12-cup muffin tin with cooking spray or a little bit of oil to prevent sticking. This will make it easier to remove your sliders once they’re done.
Assemble the Sliders
Take the bottom half of each bun and press it gently into each muffin cup. You should press the buns in just enough to create a little nest for the delicious filling.
Fill with Meat Mixture
Spoon the cooked beef and onion mixture into each muffin cup, evenly distributing the mixture among the buns. Fill each one up to the top.
Add Cheese
Cut the slices of cheddar cheese in half and place one half on top of each slider. The cheese will melt perfectly into the savory meat mixture.
Bake
Place the muffin tin in the preheated oven and bake for 5-10 minutes. Keep an eye on them; they’re ready when the cheese has fully melted and the sliders are heated through. If you like a little more crispness, you can let them bake for a couple of extra minutes.
Serve and Enjoy!
Once done, remove the muffin tin from the oven and let the sliders cool for a minute or two before carefully removing them. Serve them up hot and enjoy!
