If you’re like most people, you probably want to take amazing travel photos to show off to your friends and family… and have some fantastic photo memories, too! But sometimes it’s hard to know how to get the best shots.

I’ve taken thousands of photos from my travels plus hundreds of hours of filming for my new travel television series, “Love Eat Travel with Michelle Valentine“.

Taking great travel photos does not just happen by accident – it takes a little bit of planning and effort.

Here are tips on how to get the best shots for your travel photos:

Use a high-quality camera

Whether you’re an amateur photographer or a professional, using a high-quality camera is essential for getting the best travel photos.

With a high-quality camera, you’ll be able to capture sharp images with beautiful detail. And if you’re planning on printing your photos, a high-quality camera will ensure that your prints are of the highest quality.

There are many different types of cameras on the market, so it’s important to do your research and find the one that’s right for you.

Do your research

If you want to get the best shots possible, you need to do your research before you even start your journey! Before you go to a new place, spend some time researching online the best spots to take photos. This will help you make the most of your time when you’re there and ensure that you get some great shots.

Find out where the best photo spots are and plan your route accordingly. This will help you make the most of your time and get the best photos possible.

Get there early

Arriving early will help you avoid the crowds. This is especially important if you’re shooting in a popular tourist spot. Getting there early is always a good idea so you can avoid the crowds and get the perfect shot.

Arrive at least 30 minutes to an hour before sunrise or sunset. This will give you time to set up your tripod and camera and to find the best spot.

Once the sun starts to rise or set, the light changes quickly, so you’ll want to be perfectly in place and ready to shoot.

Use natural light

If you want to take amazing travel photos, one of the best things you can do is use natural light. Outdoor light is typically more flattering and can help you capture the true essence of your surroundings. So next time you’re planning a trip, be sure to plan your itinerary around the times of day when the light is most beautiful.

Of course, using natural light isn’t always possible, and sometimes you’ll need to rely on artificial light sources. When this is the case, be sure to position your subjects so that they’re lit from the front or side, rather than from behind. This will help avoid side-shadows and create more even lighting.

With these lighting tips in mind, you’ll be sure to take amazing travel photos that capture the beauty of your surroundings.

If you’re still unsure about getting good lighting, consider a lighting kit. They are lightweight and make a world of difference in your travel photos!

Use a Tripod

A tripod will help you keep your camera steady and avoid blurry photos. It’s also a great way to get creative with your shots and experiment with different angles.

While you can technically take photos without one, your results will be much better if you use a tripod. Trust me – your photos will thank you!

Shoot in RAW

RAW files are the best quality files you can get from your camera. They’re uncompressed and larger in size, but they contain all the data from your sensor and give you the most flexibility when editing.

If you’re serious about getting great travel photos, shooting in RAW is a must.

Edit your photos

Editing your photos is a great way to bring out their potential and make them look their best. There are a variety of software programs you can use to edit your photos, so find one that you’re comfortable with and experiment with different techniques.

That’s a wrap!

There are many factors that contribute to getting great photos while traveling. First and foremost, research your destination and plan your shots in advance. Second, be prepared to seize opportunities as they present themselves. And finally, don’t forget to enjoy the experience and have fun!
